HRA Tax Exemption Tips
Metro vs Non-Metro

For metro cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad), HRA exemption is 50% of basic salary. For non-metro cities, it is 40%.

When is Landlord PAN Needed?

If your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, you must provide your landlord's PAN to your employer. If the landlord doesn't have a PAN, a written declaration is required.

Revenue Stamp Rule

A ₹1 revenue stamp is mandatory on rent receipts for cash payments exceeding ₹5,000 under the Indian Stamp Act. No stamp needed for UPI, bank transfer, or cheque payments.

Supporting Documents

Along with rent receipts, keep rental agreement, bank statements showing rent transfers, and landlord PAN (if applicable) ready for HRA claim verification.
